I’m co-hosting a party at a friend’s house tomorrow night for a local political candidate. The real hostess has placed me in charge of the cheese platter and dessert. I’ve turned to one of my heroines for inspiration. No, silly, not Julia Child. Amy. My dessert will be her Three Way Cake with Sloppy Seconds.
The cake is three layers. Two batches of homemade yellow cake are divided into four parts, three of which become the cake. One part remaines yellow, and thanks to cooking magic the second becomes chocolate, and the third spice. The fourth, the leftover yellow cake batter, becomes the sloppy seconds: cupcakes. I’m frosting eveything with her rabbit Dusty’s chocolate buttercream frosting.
As for the cheese, I’m making Amy’s Lil’ Smoky Cheese Ball. That link is a a two-part clip of her appearance on the Martha Stewart Show two weeks ago. Amy and Martha make dueling cheese balls. The Lil’ Smoky has smoked Gouda and steak sauce. Martha makes hers with cheddar, chutney and dried cranberries. It’s hilarious because Amy, as usual, sasses Martha at every turn.
I’m surprised Martha hasn’t backhanded her yet. Speaking of cheese, just in case you don’t like smoked cheese and I haven’t gotten enough Amy this weekend, she’ll be on Paula’s Party tonight, making another of her famous cheese balls.
