This seems to be our year. First Erin, and now Patia, have hit us with two of the various memes circulating around, as Senator Ted Stevens likes to call it, this series of tubes. Patia’s is “Why Do I Blog?” Good question. Every now and again I tried keeping a diary when I was little.
What would happen was that we’d be visiting some little shop in Chinatown, and I’d spot one of these blank books with a Chinese flowered satin cover and instantly covet it. All the other girls I knew kept a diary and, true to form, I wanted a diary of my own in one of those books. Lord knows what they wrote in their own Little Twin Stars diaries. At age nine or ten all I could come up with was homework, my orthodontist, my cat and the occasional kiss from a neighborhood boy.
Not much has changed. That’s why I’m surprised I’ve kept this blog thing up for over five years now. I’m not one to sustain any long-term interest in any hobby. I always gave up the childhood diary after a week, only to take it up again several months later after a trip into the City. I can only hope my subjects have gotten somewhat more interesting in the intervening thirty years. Here I touch on politics, try to work through heartbreak, and just generally be silly (okay, that last one is Matt’s, but I still think it’s hilarious).
I guess I blog because I still blog, if that’s any answer. No, I blog because you’re there. I think all I needed when I was that young girl scribbling away in those blank Chinese books was an audience.
